Circulation Volunteers
The Helen Kate Furness Free Library has a strong tradition of dedicated volunteers who help us provide excellent service to our community. Our team of about 60 volunteers work at our customer service desks, supporting our staff of professional librarians.
As a circulation volunteer, you will work directly with the public – greeting patrons, checking materials in and out, answering basic questions, and helping connect visitors with the resources they need. You’ll become part of a team committed to the library’s mission: to bring lifelong learning, discovery, and joy to the community.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys interacting with the public and can work independently while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
Time commitment:
- 2-3 hour shift once per week
- Minimum 6-month committment due to the training required
- We are not able to offer short-term or seasonal volunteer opportunities
Requirements:
- Age 18+ for main desk volunteers; 14+ for children’s desk volunteers
- Ability to:
- Create a welcoming atmosphere where we make our resources and services accessible to all
- Deliver warm, consistent, and respectful customer service
- Enjoy talking with patrons of all ages
- Protect patron privacy and confidentiality
- Use a computer, type proficiently, and assist patrons with basic technology
- Use a cash register and credit card reader (main desk only)
